Airbrush Makeup... What the heck is it?!

TO AIRBRUSH OR NOT TO AIRBRUSH?

Most brides looking for a makeup artist for their big day has probably heard of “Airbrush Makeup”. But, what exactly is it? And, more importantly, is it actually needed?

Being a professional makeup artist, my short answer is yes. You should consider airbrush makeup because it’s absolutely worth it!

What is it?

Airbrush makeup is a type, or medium, of makeup. It’s achieved by adding a special liquid makeup to an airbrushing gun that is powered by an air compressor. The gun then blows out a controlled fine mist of makeup onto the face for a perfectly even veil of foundation.

While the machine and technique are very similar to other types of airbrushing, such as cake decorating, spray tanning, painting, etc, the liquid makeup formula used in the machine is what makes it totally different. The airbrush makeup’s formula typically comes in three forms: water-based, silicone-based, and alcohol-based. While water-based and silicone-based are completely acceptable for use on the face, alcohol-based airbrushing formulas are reserved for the body (think full body painting).

Wait, there are different types of airbrush makeup?

Yup! Silicone-based airbrush makeup is my personal favorite for long days, such as a wedding day. The silicone sets onto the skin (actually, it adheres) and creates a natural “blurring” effect to any enlarged pores. This foundation also has a verrrry long wear time: 16-24 hours.

I heard airbrushing is super cakey and heavy.

Unfortunately, we hear this a lot, and that’s not always the case! Since airbrushing is a type, or medium, of makeup, there are SO many different ways of applying it! An experienced makeup artist knows how to have complete control of the amount of product used, the color mixture, and the coverage applied. The airbrushing artist can make the airbrush foundation as sheer as s/he wants, or as heavy.

What if I want the “No Makeup” makeup look?

Airbrushing is actually one of the best techniques and products to use to achieve a makeup-less look. Since it’s sprayed onto the skin as a fine mist, your face isn’t masked by makeup. We can even control the pressure and coverage to allow for natural skin to shine through (great if you have freckles that you want to enhance, not cover!).

How does it come off?

The makeup itself is water-resistant and will hold tight through sweat, rain, and tears. When it’s time to remove your makeup at bedtime, it can be removed with any makeup remover or face wash and water.
